1. What was the main influence on your decision to wear the scarf?

A. Religious obligation and/or identity
B. Cultural expectation/obligation
C. Family
D. Friends
E. Other:

It started because of family but over the years it's changed to fulfill a religious obligation.

2. What's the best thing about wearing the headscarf?

A. Fullfilling religious obligation
B. Belonging to a certain group
C. Being free of sexual harassment
D. Other:

Fullfilling religious obligations. I have had a fair share of sexual harassment and advances even being a hijabi.

3. What's the worst thing about wearing the headscarf?

A. Racism/Prejudice
B. Feeling different/strange/odd/out of place
C. Hot weather
D. Trying to be fasionable AND modest at the same time
E. Other:

Both racism/prejudice and trying to be fashionable and modest at the same time.
When I was in junior high, I remember some guy commenting how I dressed so well for someone who's not American. What he was suggesting was that every part of me needed to be distant from western culture just because I wore hijab. I realized that by not wearing abaaya and trying to wear clothes which were more trendy made me as a hijabi look more approachable and like "them" to people who had no clue as to why I was putting a piece of fabric on my head.

4. Should a Muslim woman who wears the scarf be expected to be a role model of a "good Muslim?"

A. Yes
B. No
C. Depends
D. Other:

Yes, definitely. If a hijabi girl is clubbing, people who view this girl have a false conclusion that it is okay for hijabis, or muslims in general, to be in these types of settings.
Hijabis are automatically labeled as actual followers of Islam by people who don't know them and I think it's their responsibility to practice their religion with the mindset that when people see them, they're not seeing them as an individual but as a practicing follower of Islam.
Therefore, girls who wear hijab should take on the responsibility and try their best to avoid places or actions which would make a haraam act seem okay.
However, I think this rule applies to all muslims, not just hijabis. I have met people, who after I told them I was muslim, asked me if I wanted to go drinking. I was shocked and I told them that I don't drink and that it's forbidden in my religion to do so. They told me that they didn't know this because all of their muslim friends drink.
I must also clarify that although someone is a hijabi, doesn't necessarily mean that they are active in practicing their religion and I know plenty of girls that just don't care what haraam they do. They're forced to continue to wear hijab because of social or family pressures.

5. Is it ever OK for a Muslim who wears the headscarf to appear without it in public for any reason?

A. No, never
B. Yes, whenever
C. Depends
D. Other:

I would like to say no, but I really don't know. I have friends that have taken off the hijab and apart of me was glad that they did based on the comments I stated above.
However, taking it off kind of under minds the whole concept of hijab. "I'm going to cover and try to be modest today but tomorrow I don't want to."
Also, for the sake of the individual, I hope that she wouldn't. People view it as being unstable and indecisive. Especially if she's constantly flip-flopping or wearing it only for school and not for work.

6. What is your usual scarf/hijab style? (Do you match your scarf with your outfit? Do you wear an abaya or niqaab? Do you wear only a certain color of scarf? Etc...)

I always try to match my scarf with my outfit, unless I'm just really lazy and don't have it in me to iron one that matches.

7. Are you the type that is

A. OK with a little neck or ear or shoulder or hairline exposed
B. or are you the type that must cover every inch?

I try to cover every inch. If I see hair showing, I will most definitely try to fix my scarf to my hair is fully concealed. I'll also tell my friends if their hair is showing.

Country: Canada and South Africa
What was the main influence on your decision to wear the scarf?
E. Other: I wasn't even muslim yet but I loved the stylish abayas when I was in the Gulf and coming back tried to prove to my friends that people in Canada were not racist against others. Turns out they are sometimes: against muslims. I started wearing the scarf full time because I wanted to be recognized as a believing woman and it reminded me I was a representative of Islam so in turn I became a better person (I gave up bad habits like drinking and gambling)

2. What's the best thing about wearing the headscarf?
C+D combined: Actually, I guess I get more sexual comments now (the town where I grew up is quite ignorant: "take off that scarf and I'll f--- you" being a once a week thing but now people are forced to regard me for my beliefs and my actions rather than my physical beauty and my nationality. I feel more free now, even though life is a bit more challenging.

3. What's the worst thing about wearing the headscarf?

A.&E: Other is that people's prejudice and racism affects people other than myself, my husband, and my family. People will think my father and my husband forces me to dress the way I do, so I can't just do things I want to, like climb out my bedroom window cuz I have my brother in law sleeping in the hall and I don't want to wake him up but I have to go out. People will think not that I'm some super cool girl whose really nice, they'll think my family are beasts.

4. Should a Muslim woman who wears the scarf be expected to be a role model of a "good Muslim?"
A. Yes, but no one is perfect. When I first became a muslim I didn't know much about my religion and I was still drinking. I realized I didn't want people to see a muslim woman drinking so I took off my hijab to drink in a bar. I had one drink and it was my last. I realized how naked I felt without my hijab, and the protection it was to me, my promise to Allah more sincere than any wedding ring, that I had just taken it off. Hijab helped me quit a habit and that's quite a thing for a little piece of fabric to accomplish. I think, if you are going to wear hijab, you shouldn't do things that are publically forbidden in Islam like dating, or drinking, or playing the slot machines in Vegas like one niqabi I saw! he he he. I think you should be praying five times a day. I think, if you are doing these things, you can wear hijab and know the rest is the best you can do after that. This goes for all muslims. Don't say you are a Muslim if you drink, date, or don't pray five times a day. It gives the wrong impression. If this is you, and you believe there is one God, you are still Muslim, and insha'Allah, Allah willn help you to be more sincere in your faith if you are not harming others by creating wrong perceptions of your brothers and sisters.

5. Is it ever OK for a Muslim who wears the headscarf to appear without it in public for any reason?

A. No, never: that is, if you are doing no act that is harram, and are praying five times a day. These things come before hijab. My parents forbid me to wear hijab and so I moved out but I believe this was not what I was supposed to do in my religion (now that I am more educated in it). I could have compromised by wearing a beret hat and turtleneck. Not perfect hijab, but follwing the basic precepts of it, and not alienating them.
6. What is your usual scarf/hijab style? (Do you match your scarf with your outfit? Do you wear an abaya or niqaab? Do you wear only a certain color of scarf? Etc...)

LOL. My fave. I wear abaya almost 24/7 and sometimes niqab if I don't want my picture taken and I have to appear in public. If the situation calls for it I'll wear western clothes but halal-i-fied, and I'll make sure that there is still an overgarment involved. I love all the different styles of hijab from designer dubai abayas to cool Egyptian hijab styles. In our religion there is no hadith or ayah that rules on colour and people who say there is are liars. We are meant to dress in beauty in accordance to our modesty and means. We should wish our characters to equal our clothes. We should not stand out like an adornment because of our plainess or ugliness.

7. Are you the type that is
b. cover every inch, but I wear make-up, and wear earrings (no neck or ear showing, but costume earrings sometimes). i don't like hair showing with hijab. I am like, c'mon girls, don't wear your scarf as a headband. But I have slippage. Don't we all?

I always match my scarf with my outfit. If i can't be bothered to iron or just can't be bothered period, I wear the 2 piece al Amira (normally black bcz I more often that not wear black pants and so it goes better). I really don't like it when girls wear patterned hijabs with floral printed clothes, but then again who am I to judge? It really all is personal.

B. or are you the type that must cover every inch?

I cover every inch. However, I really like the way it looks when you can see a tiny little ear with some earings and a little neck. It looks really cute on teenage girls who are starting out to wear hijab. However, like I said I would not wear it like that. I feel most comfortable when I am fully covered.

6. What is your usual scarf/hijab style? (Do you match your scarf with your outfit? Do you wear an abaya or niqaab? Do you wear only a certain color of scarf? Etc...)

ANSWER: I wear modest colors, I don't wear things that sparkle. I wear clothing that is valid to pray in ie: covers the thighs, bottom etc, cover my feet. I dont show any strands of hair. I am a student of sacred knowledge and I have learned what is valid in the Hanafi madhab and how to properly cover.

7. Are you the type that is
B. or are you the type that must cover every inch?
ANSWER: I have studied in the Hanafi madhab that it is not manditory to cover your face, hands or feet. I cover everything for the exception of the hands and face.

I was told by a scholar, that you should not rely on your religious acts alone, it is in Allah's Divine Mercy that He give you good or make you one who disobeys.

I pray that we all act according to His command and pray for tawfiq, and try not to "fit in" and be dupped in by commercial adverts trying to be "trendy". Hijab is beautiful because it was given to use from the One who created Beauty.
